The Cutting Edge
What is Tightrope CCL?
TightRope® surgery is often a good choice for small to medium‑sized dogs, dogs with moderate activity levels, or patients with early cruciate injuries and minimal arthritis. It can also be an excellent alternative for dogs who may not be ideal candidates for more invasive procedures such as TPLO. Because every dog is unique, our veterinary team will evaluate your pet’s size, lifestyle, anatomy, and overall health to recommend the surgical option that will provide the best long‑term outcome.
Techniques similar to TightRope® have been used successfully in human medicine for many years. When selected appropriately, this procedure offers a reliable, less‑invasive option that supports healing, improves comfort, and helps dogs return to an active, happy life.
What Are the Benefits?
Because the FiberTape is attached through the bones of the joint, providing bone to bone fixation, the Tightrope technique most closely mimics the natural function of an intact CCL. FiberTape is stronger and less likely to stretch than the material used in the traditional extra-capsular repair technique.
The Tightrope surgery technique is less invasive than the TPLO surgery technique – which involves cutting bone.
What is the Recovery?
Recovery from TightRope® CCL surgery typically takes about 8 weeks. For the first two weeks, your dog will wear a soft cast or bandage to protect the incision and limit movement. Over the next six weeks, controlled activity and low‑impact physical therapy exercises help restore strength and mobility.
During recovery, your dog must remain calm and quiet, with activity levels increasing gradually according to veterinary guidance. Our team will provide clear at‑home instructions and perform recheck exams to monitor healing and support you throughout the recovery process.
